V: We're going to do 15 minutes; is that satisfactory?
K: I gave the wrong impression. I don't give a damn
about being on. Our people feel that to be on between a chimpanzee
and the weather forecast, I shouldn't do it. And since I'm indifferent
I'm willing to skip it.
V: Okay. I'm not going to pressure you.
K: If you want to set up an independent program I would be
glad to do it. They--I don't do this on my own--they feel if I am on,
since I never do this sort of thing, if I am on, I should be on for some-
thing important. What do you think?
V: Well, don't quote me, but I think you're absolutely right.
K: They think it makes me look like a book author plugging
a book.
V: Well, don't quote me
K: No I won't. But I want you to know if you hadn't been
the interviewer I wouldn't have considered it.
V: Well, thank you very much. I think you're absolutely
right. You know, they're all 'show business' here. I said he's not
going to do it, and they said well try.
K: Well if you're doing anything independent let me know.
And the next time you're in Washington, call me. I enjoyed lunchon
Saturday.
V: Thank you. I will.
