P: There are periods when they need us and we need them. In the meantime,
we have got to get this
off of our platter in a way where we show some
credibility.
K: We have that.
P: We go on our way with Vietnamization. I think that's fine. That's a good
game plan. Have Haldeman check with Mitchell on the student thing. They are
finding it difficult to get the strike mobilized.
K: Have you seen the front page of the Star? Favorable. Even Brinkley had
pictures of caches.
P: We don't want to overplay it. When you have the cards, play poker hand
softly. It will accomplish the purpose. Time will tell.
K: Did get 121 tons of rice. Altogether 800, 000 lbs. of rice.
P: One million is a good figure.
K: All TV reports on that part of it are quite favorable. I haven't seen on TV
and in the press what happened at Kent State.
P: They'd play it as an anti-war, anti-Cambodian action wouldn't they?
K: In the Star they didn't.
P: They will play it that way. Our people will have to have the guts to see
it through. So be it! This is not the way policy is to be made.
K: Capturing vast amounts of equipment.
P: The sophisticated ones will point out the amounts are not vast.
In Fish Hook we have another couple of weeks. Parrot's Beak will pick up
more than Fish Hook.
K: I think they are at them now. They have made a pincer movement. I think
they will get prisoners there. As Haig said, it won't be decisive.
P: We were giving them the best we had under difficult circumstances. Thank
God we had bombing strikes too. I think they will cool after several days.
Tomorrow we will say there is no change in policy in this Administration. If
anybody wants to question logistics around that area
