Senator Javits
6/2/70 6:35 p. m.
J: Are you free for a late dinner tonight?
K: No, I wish I were. I have to go to a birthday dinner for myself.
J: Best wishes. I was just wondering. Barbara Walters and her
husband are opening at Shady Grove tonight
K: I would love to do it.
J: Want to?
K: No, can't.
J: I understand your office has now seized the appointments of
the Overseas
I have raised hell about it.
I think they have done a ghastly job.
K: A member of my staff has talked to the Senate?
J: We heard about it from
was it Bergsten?
K: Jesus Christ. I don't like my people to lobby.
J: There was no lobbying. I would like you to be apprised of the
story, and I'11 brief you. I've told them I'11 oppose all their appoint-
ments. But now that you'r in it it's a different story.
K: I usually look at the list only for foreign policy reasons.
J: They've put together a mediocre list and apssed over the best.
Like H. Robert Salzman. I, and Q other Senators, nominated him for
President.
K: Would you like to talk to me about it?
J: Yes.
K: If that's what you want, that's what we'll do. It's nothing I have
normally gotten actively involved in, but if you are interested I am too.
Let me look at it and then let's you and me have breakfast next week some
time.
J: Wonderful. Harry Flemming is the guy who's got it
K: Okay. I'll talk to him and then to you.
