M: Brian wanted XXXX to know mainly whether you were able to see President
Nixon re the possibility of a meeting.
K: I have talked about our conversation with him.
M: What was his response?
K: I told Brian what I think we should do. I think the thing to do was that he I
would do my best to arrange a meeting after he starts eating. And I will do that.
M: We were under the impression that it was going on the meeting whether or
not he will go off the fast.
K: It's difficult through an intermediary. I was impressed with him. It would be
an act of confidence and grace not to do it in relation with his own immediate
situation and I will do my best to arrange an appointment and I usually succeed
when I do my best. I think frankly as a friend of his, I hope, it will be much more
effective to do this axix if he does it for what he believes.
M: You have not talked to President Nixon and asked him?
K: I have, yes.
M: What did he say?
K: It would destroy the whole thing (if I told you) and start a set (?) of newspaper
stories. I told Brian that there would be no sense unless he thought it was
possible.
M: Was he favorable or negative?
K: Re the conversation?
M: Yes.
K: He was very impressed.
M: And the point of an appointment would have to be made after he goes off the
fast?
K: Yes, and I would support it strongly. I would appreciate it if we could keep
these to ourselves and not in the newspapers.
M: The conversation we are having now? Did that embarrass you, especially
with the President?
