K: I wanted to ask you on a personal basis on this new appointment we have to
make. Do you know Peterson of Bell and Howell?
B: I think extremely well of him. Very clear headed, very bright, and effective.
Not as analytical as Elliott is.
K: He is absolutely irreplacable on that point.
B: He uses staff and uses it well. My acquaintance goes back only a k year and
is limited to philanthropy and public pxx broadcasting.
K: You know nothing about his foreign policy views?
B: I don't know a thing. We have never discussed it. I could find out for you.
K: On a quite basis, obviously.
B: I talked to Elliott this morning and he wondered who too. You have a problem
because in the last months the people outside the government have said some-
thing to limit their current usefulness. I was thinking about some poeple on the
scene and I would recommend Chafee.

K: Really? hat's interesting.
&
B: He is very interesting and sensible. He's not as bright as Elliott. I know
nothing about him on the scene there. Those service secretary jobs are a
dead end.
K: I have heard nothing adverse.
B: You would have to see how he is on the Armed Services Committee.
K: We can do that.
B: I will find out what I can on Pete's views on foreign policy.
