TELCON Dr. Neustadt/Kissinger 12:23 pm 6/9/70 K: I got your note and rather than engage in extended correspondence -- I have absolutely refused to talk to newsmen about this meeting nor has any member of this staff. Most of this is a re-write of Mary McGrory and what ever was said on TV from the group when the emerged and items from the Crimson. I have said I never took the meeting seriously. N: I don't think you should say -- I don't either. K: I don't feel threatened. Whether I will or want to come back to a university I really don't know but that's independent. I have some strong objections to the group but not because I felt threatened. As a friend, I thought it was inhuman at that time. N: I did too. K: That has absolutely nothing to do -- N: Speaking as a member of the department I just wanted to say anything I could if you needed reassurance. K: I appreciated the spirit of your letter and it was very generous of you. N: Don't be silly. K: It was very much appreciated. There are no hard personal feelings on my side. N: The point is that in the department there is nothing but a desire to have you back when and if you can. K: You are very nice. N: You are an ornament. K: Wait til we clean out the sanctuaries in Laos! N: I don't know what political science is but whatever it is, you are an ornament of it. K: I have made no decisions about coming back in Feb. N: That was not said to press you. K: No, I don't feel that.
