Telecon Vice President 6/17/70 9:50 a. m. VP: Have you seen Ambassador Tasca today? K: No, but I will. VP: I spent an hour with him yesterday. He is eloquent and strong for some of the things that need to be said about our detractors in NATO and Greece. I hope that you will call upon him if there's a chance today. K: He will be called upon. VP: He feels strongly about these things and he's got some good information, which indicates that things are better in Greece than the public accounts say. Papadapoulos, he feels, is our only hope for a democratic government. K: I don't know why it's our job to install domestic regimes. All of the self-righteous breast beating is a little much. VP: I know, but the Soviets are stirring things up in the back door and in the front door they are geing very conciliatory. A Bul- garian diplomat visited Greece for the first time. They are trying to WOO them away from us and the French are willing to sell them anything they want. He feels that Papaddpolos wants to move toward a democratic government, but there are people standing in the eaves shoudl he go down the drain who aren't interested in that at all. He's an eloquent spokesman. Sometimes you can't shut him off; he erupts like Old Faithful. K: I've scheduled a meeting the President for him at 2:30. And he will be at the NSC meeting. VP: I'11 sort of encourage him. K: Good, because the Secretary of State doesn't have exactly the same view, as you may know. VP: I've got some troubles of my own, as you can tell from the news reports. I don't know what we're trying to do, but nobody1s going to protect the Administratinn but itself. The surprising thing
