Secretary Rogers
6/22/60 11:20 a. m.
R: Was your meeting in Mexico international intrigue or a
sexual confrontation?
K: I'll leave it up to the lecherous imaginations of my colleagues.
R: I've been talking to Marshall Green. I like Jonathan Moore.
I want him to stay. Elliot would like him to go with him. Does the
President know him and have any feelings about him?
K: The President knows him. The President would feel that
if you have confidence in him then that's enough. I know him and like
him. He doesn't have to move on our account if that's the drift of the
question.
R: Yes it is. He is undecided whether to go or not. He likes
what he's doing. He's very capable. If we indicated that we have con-
fidence in him he's stay--if not, he'd probably go.
K: The President doesn't know him well enough to take a positive
stand but there's no problem with him as far as our office or the President
is concerned. He knows him mostly as Romney's assistant.
R: He worked with Rockefeller too didn't he?
K: Yes, he worked with me so I can't use working with Rockefeller
as a reason for disqualifying him.
R: Okay. I know we're going to meet at San Clemente, next
Monday. I wonder if we shouldn't have a meeting before. I am going to
be pestered with questions and I wonder if we shouldn't check about troop
withdrawals before.
K: What the President wanted was a meeting in San Celmente with
you and yne or two of your assistante. I would be a State meeting with pictures
to offset what was said about the last one. At that occasion he's discuss
troop withdrawals, but he doesn't want to take it up here. Every time he
discusses troop withdrawals here a thousand leaks come out--not out of your
shop.
R: Why don't you and I sit down for a half hour. I'd like to know
how he would have me emphasize these things.
