M: I called with a question which I hope was relayed to you.
K: The answer is the decision was not produced by McCain.
M: No, that's not the question. The question was when did
the
President make his final decision about the number of troops to be
withdrawn?
K: Ee had marke that figure in mind all along. The only question
was in how many bites he'd present it. And he had that figure in mind
several weeks previously.
M: Yes, but the final decision itself. I had found some pretty
good Defense Department sources
K: They don't have any idea.
M: No, they don't. I am trying to find out because I have reason
to believe that some were surprised by the figure.
K: That may be but he had told the senior officials all along
it was going to be different from what it had been Before, X in a larger
package over a longer period of time.
M: If I wrote that he didn't make the decision until the time
of the speech
K: That would be wrong.
M: Wrong by a day or wrong by a week?
K: By week.
M: If I said he made the decision the night before the speech
K: That would be wrong.
M: Then I won't write it. I appreciate your calling back.
K: I appreciate your meticulousness.
