The President
7/14/70 7:27 p. m. page 2
K: The basic framework in the country is good and for you.
P: It knocked the press for a loop.
K: I bet--that's not their image of the country.
P: We'll see what Huntley says. That was a fantastic article.
I never met the guy socially in my life.
K: I think he revealed himself. David Lawrence zinged him today.
He takes on the "shallow" part. He says the opposite is true.
P: Among other things, people can say I'm complex and devious,
which I am, but the word "superficial" applies less to me than to anyone
who's been there for a long time. Even your friend McGeorge Bundy
would say that.
K: That's not a charge I've heard. "Complex" is not a
criticism
for a President. One should worry if the President is not complex.
John Scali was in today. He's a friend of yours.
P: He's an honest man.
K: He said the Middle East stuff is one of the most outrageous
things.
P: Good for him.
K: He said this is ridiculous people trying to create a crisis and
he wouldn't xtxx report it. Because he said it was absolutely frivilous.
P: What did he say about Cambodia?
K: On Cambodia
he's the guy tho said for the sake of his daughter
he hoped it would succeed. He thinks is has. His daugher is feeling better now.
He's gkix going to hit us once in a while
P: He should, just like Howard Smith. People took those newsmen
on
for
their questions, and they shouldn't have. They were darn hard. But
I
understand that.
K: Howard Smith is for us.
P. He's a, sound man. You might have him in and tell him what the game is
and tell him we ve had an interesting response fromSoviets. Have him in tomorrow
