TELECON Mr. Kissinger/Cyrus Vance/Adam alinsky 9:50 p.m., October 7, 1970 K: I couldn't call you earlier, I've been going crazy all day getting things together but I hope very much that it will be possible to get some support -- I know you would probably put it differently with a unilateral withdrawal. [We want to get] serious negotiations off the ground with a show of unity. V: Let me tell you what I have written down here. I welcome and support the President's proposal to end the killing and move toward a truly representative South Vietnamese Government. This is the right policy, I hope everyone will get behind it and give it a chance. I've been trying to get hold of the New York Times and can't reach them. K: Do you want me to -- V: You can put it out down there. K: Would you read it to me again. V: Read the text again. K: This is very generous of you. V: You have gone a long, long way and I want to help. K: We have worked on SO many things, trying to stay in gear. Would you read that last part again? V: I hope everyone will get behind it and give it a chance. K: Excellent. That will help tremendously. V: Adam is here and wants to speak to you. y W: Henry. K: Hello Adam. y W : I am trying to get a hold of some friends in Cambridge to try and get up some kind of statement. Moved an enormous way. If I don't get through to Neustadt and this evening, you can certainly use me as a help.
