R: I have talked to the people and we have 3 suggestions to make. One looks
good in terms of availability. Carter Findley -- Ph. D in Turkish history and
Middle Eastern Center at Harvard. 30 years old. Student of David's.
He's in VN on some history project. David thinks you could acquire his services.
David thinks he would be a good staff person. Take orders and independence of
thinking.
K: Could he take over?
R: It wasn't clear at what level you wanted someone,
K: I want to replace Saunders.
R: How old is he?
K: 40-ish but an experienced bureaucrat. Where is Findley?
R: IN VN.
K: With what?
R: I am not sure. Talk to David Landes about him. What I really did was get
the ixxx information for you. On the other two you will have to talk to Sam
Huntington. The other two, and you may know one or both of them, are
R. Holbrook
K: Out of the question. He is the most indiscreet man in town.
R: The other is Geo. Kelly. He is on leave from Brandeis.
K: Very bright.
R: Just working in Cambridge.
K: He doennt have the emotional stability. He is outstanding intellectually.
He gives me an idea to put on my staff for something.
R: Another man that seemed too senior I asked Nadav Safran without saying
why I wanted the information. He suggested Lucious Battle. He is a former
foreign service officer.
K: He is a former Ambassador. He would be the first Foreign Serivce officer
without (set views) on the M. E.
