Secretary Laird
12/21/70 8:50 a. m.
L: I understand you're going to have a meeting at 11:00 on the
language problem we've been having with various conference reports
between the House and the Senate.
K: I don't know about it.
L: At 11:00 with Dick Capen going over and Fred Bozart (sp? ).
K: Who called it?
L: I am told that you did.
K: My over-zealous staff doesn't tell me these things.
L: Well, all I wanted was to make sure that Fred came too.
He is very knowledgeable. He has worked up there on these committees.
K: If there is such a meeting we'll let anyone you want come.
L: Good. Next item, evidently Hugh Sidey was told at the White
House that the President's statement as his press conference only applied
to that one day
K: On what?
L: As far as Cuba was concerned and that the situation was such
that on the next day the tender was back in the port.
K: He couldn't have beent told that at the White House. I haven't
talked to him in a long time and no one else knows about it.
L: He was briefed.
K: Not at the White House.
L: I think he was and his information is incorrect. That tender
will probably go in there some time this morning or went in last night but
that story is just not true.
K: Well, A, he wasn't briefed at the White House.
L: Was there a story put out that the President's statement applied
only to that one day?
