TELCON Sen. Dole/Kissinger 5:55 pm 12/22/70 K: I was just talking to the President and I wondered if you want to take on Kennedy on the POW thing because he called this morning and said he had urgently to talk to the President. Then he calls Rogers and says he has a list of names. Rogers and I ask him to keep it quiet until we could check the names in order not to raise hopes. He wouldn't do that. He didn't release the names. We have finally gotten the names and there's not one xxgx single name we haven't had. He is raising false hopes at Christmas time. D: No new names? K: No. We have two more names that weren't put on the list. So it's the same old list we have had. D: So all hopes and dreams are dashed. K: Fulbright had the same request and send a man over but he kept quiet. D: I was asked today and said I didn't know if it were new. Someone asked me today about it and wondered if Kennedy tried to upstage. I said we didn't play that game. K: It doesn't take but 15 minutes to check those names. D: XXXXX He may show up in a while. Nothing but a press conference then. K: That's right. He called us but then he went to leak to the pressxxx on names and finally when we get the names we find there's no new name. Whether you do it today or tomorrow, doesn't matter. D: It might be better tomorrow. It's a valid point to raise -- in his haste to make news he made much misery. Thanks and Merry Christmas. K: Merry Christmas to you.
