Director Helms
1/12/71 9:03 a. m.
H: After our conversation of yesterday regarding Cushman's possible
return to the Marine Corps I walked in and since last night he had received
a
call from General Dan [Don? ] Hughes putting up several names for his
replacement.
K: God damn that Hughes!
H: I said why don't you hold on for a while, first because [this is not
certain yet] and second I am not sure that the President ought to go the
route of getting another Marine Deputy. The Marine Corps has gotten
the idea that this is their slot and tha't not necessarily the case. It seems
to me that if this change does take place it might be desirable for you and
me and the President to sit down and think about what we want.
K: Absolutely!
Just tell sit tight on it. Who did he name?
H: General Robert
,
he's an Air Force general and
has been put up several times for this.
K: Yes, I know him. I wouldn't consider him.
H: The other was General Phillips, in the Apollo program.
K: I don't know him.
H: But I think this can wait till after your return
K: Absolutely. We should keep it quiet.
H: Yes, I don't want to make hima lame duck before his time. And
I am under the impression that this should await Laird's return.
K: That's right. Just say that I told you to sit tight on it.
