Secretary Laird
2/4/71 6:35 p. m.
L: I wanted to make sure everyone is aboard on the idea of not going
to far in these briefings.
K: What briefings.
L: The briefings that are set up for Saturday.
K: Oh Jesus yes.
L: There may not be any airlift of personnel at all on Friday. If the
weather is bad they will continue to use roads.
K: Why talk about airlift at all?
L: I don't think we should. Some people think there should be a full
briefing like the one to Stennis to for other members of the leadership.
K: No! We gave him the full briefing because his approval was crucial
to us. Why don't you do this? Why don't you get your people to prepare a
briefing and bring it to the WSAG tomorrow and I will back it.
L: Okay. I didn't want to overstate the things that might not happen.
K: Should say something like "there might be some airlift depending on
the situation. 11 It's not bad to give them that much detail.
L: I was concerned that you wanted full briefings.
K: Oh God no. What I have been pushing for, and I am not sure Bill is
ageard
L: Bill is all aboard now. He was over here. I got Bill Abaord. He
understands.
K: That we should downplay our role in it.
L: Bill is fine. He was here in my office for two hours today.
K: That's why I don't want a letter to the UN or anything
L: I was concerned from my WSAG debriefing today that you wanted to
give full briefings to everyone. The lower you play it the better off you are.
K: That's our strategy.
