TELCON
Mr. Kissinger/Secretary Laird
8:35 m., February 15, 1971
K:
How are you?
L:
Very good, how are you?
K:
Coming back on the plane with the President, he mentioned that you
were going to brief the Cabinet tomorrow morning. He would like for
you to lay it in to them on a positive line because they leak like crazy.
If there are any doubts that you might have, don't bring them up.
L:
I don't have any doubts. Things are going along very well.
K:
He would like you to stress the positive to this group.
L:
The only problem is the talking about the CIA so damn much.
K:
You mean Herb Klein.
L:
The figures are SO damn wrong and I have to justify those figures
before the Committee.
K:
The figure first of all is wrong.
L:
The figure is wrong and I only talked to 5 people in the Senate and
5 people in the House.
K:
It shouldn't have been done absolutely.
L:
This story is not true.
K:
They were hit by the enemy.
L:
We were off target but we were not on that target.
K:
How are things going?
L:
Very good. Even if the operation terminated tomorrow, it was a
success. They did a good job of disrupting the supply lines, changed
things as far as that area was concerned and things are going along
very well.
K:
Haig tells me that Intelligence reports that Tri is teed off because
not enough supplies.
