L: You may know your friend Richardson has offered me a job, and I'm
strongly inclined to take it.
K: You will make the same mistake you did the last time.
L: You really think so?
K: Yes, but I know a strong man when I see one. That sort of job you
can always get while this one you can't.
L: I know that. I've been eager though to get into some domestic work
and I can't think of a better guy to do it under.
K: No question. I am not talking against Richardson. What is it? An
Assistant Secretary?
L: Yes. Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, about 40 to 50 -
man professional shop that plays a fundamental role. I find it hard to turn it
down.
K: Then you can't.
L: But I would value your advice.
K: I have selfish interests. And working here is more precarious.
L: That's doesn't bother me.
K: But any planning and programming not done out of here won't be done.
And I can't get it done with my present staff and Wayne Smith is the first to
admit this. He recommended that I ask you back SO you wouldn t be stepping
on any toes there.
L:
I
guess
I
know
that. It's not that what you offered me isn't attractive
because it is. But I think this other is different and the kind of difference
that I want to do sooner or later.
K: Well first of all, you do what you feel right about. Secondly, xthex
the other thing you would be able to do and I would help you if this Administration
gets re-elected, which I think will happen.
L: I appreciate that and am sure that!s true.
K: I think you have made up your mind anyway.
