L: After I talked with you last, and before Richardson offered me this,
I was SO convinced that I wanted to come back to Washington that I at least
told Stanford that I was thinking of leaving here and coming back to you.
And I would do that if it weren't for this thing. But I am pretty excited
about this.
K: Then why don't you do it.
L: I don't want to hurt feelings.
K: There won't be any. That's ridiculous.
L: I owe you a great deal, perhaps more than anyone else in the world.
K: But that's no basis for making a decision.
L: I am sure I would benefit as much or more back there but I kind of
want to do this other.
K: Then you have got to do it -- no question. It's good to have you in
Washington anyway.
L: I'm looking forward to coming back. I really don't like it here.
K: You couldn t work with a better man than Richardson.
L: I always thought the best thing is to pick a good man and work for him.
I've done that every time except this last one.
K: You have certainly picked the best man in the cabinet.
L: I think I will do it. It's very painful. If it hadn't come along Id have
come back to you.
K: Is Richardson's Assistant Secretary leaving?
L: Yes. I have known him. He wanted to leave and decided to do it when
he knew I was interested.
K: Well, check in with me when you are back.
L: I will. And I think you have done more for analysis than any other man.
I appreciate all you have done.
