Telecon
Secretary Laird
2/24/71 8:00 a. m.
L: You were going to call after you went over that speech. I didn't hear
from you.
K: I got called to the President. Have you got any problems with it?
L: I have no problems with it, but I think it takes away a little from the
report.
K: That's what I thought.
L: I think the report reads well, well-structured. I said I'll send you
some comments and he said I you are just supposed to read it. I I think the
text has to be put out and will probably in some cases
they'11 use a shorter thir
than the whole report -- they won't print it all. I just wanted to talk to you about
it.
K: I wasn't going to mention it to you but I have the same problem with it.
I don't think it's bad, just second rate.
L: It could be improved but if you take the structure from the report and
followed that it would be a lot better. But they didn't want me to work on it
over night. He said no SO I thought 'what the hell. 1
K: Speech writers are temperamental.
L: They sure as hell are. I said let me work on it for three hours and
he said no I'm supposed to sit with it. I said I promise I won't show it to
anyone but they didn't want me to do any restructuring on it.
K: Okay Mel, thank you for calling.
