Telecon Secretary Laird 2/24/71 11:40 a. .m. K: The Commander-in-Chief is getting lawfully sore about the slow-flying platforms he wants over there. Can you get a paper over here on that? L: I did -- I sent you a paper. K: Oh, than it's probably going through my bureaucracy. It's my fault. Does it give specific dates when it will be there. He wants to have some additional stuff. L: We're putting gunships and A-1s out there as fast as we can -- I don't know what else we can do. K: When did you send the paper over? L: I signed it Monday night -- it may not have gotten to you till yesterday. Those B-26s -- it's better to buy aircraft than to send them. All the wiring in them would have to be redone. K: I'm on your side -- I'm not finding fault. L: I know, I'm not arguing -- I'll send you a paper. K: I don't even know what a B-26 looks like. L: If you fly over Arizona you'11 see them. K: That's the wrong thing to say. Don't put that in the paper. L: But it's true. K: I know it is. It's exactly what Arnold Palmer said to him L: If you fly into Tuscon you fly over thousands of them. K: Tell him in the paper that the wings were falling off them in 163 already. L: Tom Moorer came in and said 'you're not serious about those B-26s ' I said yes I am. He said 'I wouldn't fly klaatx one of those in 163. I K: Say you have carefully examined them, that we are, of course, prepare( to do it but this is the case and I will endorse it. L: Okay.
