Telecon Secretary Laird 2/23/71 8:55 a. m. L: Henry I've been checking out these various statements around town and I think we are going to run into more of this. There were four briefings in Washngton yesterday: One here, one in State and two in the White House. K: What were the two in the White House. L: One by Herb Klein's group and one by Ron Ziegler. And if you read them over you can find differences. Then there was one in MACV and one in Region One. If I was a newspaper man I'd crucify this Administration with this. K: Of course, you are absolutely right. I am going to shut off Klein right now. What can we do about the others? L: When they talk, everyone should know what the other guy is going to say. State made a big thing out of Tchepone -- they've got to all talk the same way. K: You are right; I couldn't agree with you more. I am going to make sure he (?) gets them all together every morning. I'll do what I have just told you in this building. L: Okay. Also I understood the President was thinking of having Al go to Southeast Asia. K: Yes. L: I hope you don't send him till the operation is about half-way through. Abe will react if he sends him right when something goes a little bad. K: Let me talk with you about this -- I've just been called to the President. L: Okay. I feel very strongly about it - - I think Abrams would really resent it right now. K: ICan I talk with you about it later? L: Okay.
