G: I take it you have had a busy week.
K: It's been fairly active.
G: In response to your very generous words in a letter to me I wondered
if it would be possible for me to come to Washington and talk to you and some
of your principal associated. It would result not only in a pieee on how impor-
tant decisions are made and in something you would be eager to see published.
K: After what I've seen published lately I can hardly imagine this, but
if so I would like it to be from you.
G: Thank you very much.
K: No really. I read Tuesday Cabinet -- found it very thoughtful.
G: Thank you. You probably say what Hans Morganthau said in the
New York Review if you have time for such reading
K: No, I do make time for reading that -- it's the masochist in me.
G: I am very troubled by wh at our fellow historians are doing.
I
think
this is a period in which the social scientists have committed treason. The
amazing lack of information. That is my interest in talking about the way in
which decisions are made. The amount of talk about wh at we do is at variance
with
Any kind of help you would be willing to give me
K: Why don't you call David Halperin my assistant. He makes my
sched81 e. We111 fex definitely fix something.
G: Would it be possible to begin it during this week?
K: We will try. We will do our damnedest.
G: Wonderful. I am a great reader of your books.
K: The intellectual community is abdicating. The misrepresentation,
the gloating in what they consider American defeats. The total inability to
grant even the possibility of good faith.
G: This is what disturbs me. The theme of Tuesday Cabinet was that
men of wit and wisdom have managed American policy. But there's always
the suggestion that somebody out there has a crystal ball that works.
