TELECON
Yehuddi Menuhin/Mr. Kissinger
9:15 a. m., March 10, 1971
M:
Is this Henry Kissinger? How are you?
K:
How are you?
M:
I hope I haven't intruded on your morning. My wife is in
Washington. I am in Columbus but will be in Washington on Friday.
My wife told me the President has made an interesting announcement
about China. Some years ago, a contact of mine (M
) spoke to
me about China and told me they were interested in inviting me at
that time. I couldn't go because of our relationship -- I didn't want
to do anything wrong. Another time about 15 years ago -- I had
an invitation through the Polish people from China which I didn't
follow up. Would it be a good idea to put out feelers on this as to
whether we would think it would help?
K:
I think it would be good, but there has been no formal Presidential
announcement on travel to China. You are correct in assuming we are
disposed to relaxing restrictions. But it's an excellent idea for you
to go there.
M:
We are going to Japan anyway on April 20th. I don't know
whether it is precipitous to think of it now or whether we should wait
until October.
K:
It's probably impossible - given the way they work to
arrange it before April 20th and, secondly, I do not think U.S.
governmental support of it will increase your chances of going in.
I think we should find another way for you to approach it other than
through the U.S. Government. But we will gladly facilitate it.
M:
The French opening is still there.
K:
You can tell them you have talked to me and we would be
receptive.
M:
You know, I will probably go to Moscow at the beginning of
October. I am President of the International Music Council which
is under UNESCO, and they are hold their annual thing in Moscow.
I have not actually given the last word because I insisted on some
of their artists being
allowed to play with me before I go,
but the chances are I will be going. It would be interesting to go to
Moscow for a week and follow it up with Peking.
