E: Thank you for taking my call.
K: Listen, you sarcastic thing, when didn't I?
E: But I appreciate it when you do. John Eisanhower was here this afternoon
saying that at the dinner table in Key Biscayne there was a discussion about my
wanting to leave. Yesterday afternoon a friend said he had heard I would be
there in the middle of the summer and wanted to we me on private business.
K: I talked with the President and made clear your necessities and preferences.
He said he did understand. He would like you to stay as long as you can but if
youx felt financial necessities to leave he would understand and get you back in
during the second term. I hope you understand everyone here thinks you have
done a superb job and would like you to stay indefinitely.
E: I appreciate that. My immediate proplem is --
K: We have not discussed it with anyone except the President.
E: What I want to ask you to do is to tell Rogers and Laird about this so they
get it from you and not rumor mill because obviously the rumor mill is moving.
you
After
xixexy have told them, let me know so I can write a letter.
K: As long as I have you on the phone, Laird told me that there was a feeling
I
was blocking Eagleburger. Will you assure Larry that it's not true and any-
time
xxxxxxxxx wants to come back here or any where, I will help him?
E: I don't know why Laird would say that. I haven't heard anything from Larry.
As soon as I get a reply from the President or if you know, let me know SO
I can tell Brosio and my colleagues in advance.
K: What sort of reply do you need? I will tell Rogers and you and he work out
kawx who should be notified when.
E: Will you also tell Laird?
K: Certainly. I will tell them both this afternoon. Or let's leave it this way,
that I will call you when I have talked with them.
