TELCON Rogers/Kissinger 4:55 p.m. 3/25/71 R: I forgot to say that the meeting this morning was excellent. K: All points on the table. Of course your people XXXIX did a great job of the basic work. R: It was a sensible discussion. I don't happent to agree with the VP and Connally but it's not a stupid position. K: If you were convinced that we would lose on the other policy, it would be better to take that. when R: I don't understand the military that they turn on a record unrelated to the issues. Both Moorer and Mel sounded like there was a position that everyone agreed to. K: I don't think we should put nxxx nuclear weapons on that island now. That' wasn't the issue. Nothing said about military presence. R: That was just the opposite. K: You indicated you were in favor of meeting their military assistance request. R: If the Agnew/ Connally position is sustained it will make our jobs easier. K: Then we won't have to protect Taiwan in the UN R: Good discussion. K: We all spoke to the point.
