The President/Mr. Kissinger
3:05 p. m., April 7, 1971
P:
I'm starting to work on the final copy. Do you have any changes?
K:
There are a few -- I have to get them and I will come over.
There are a few other minor things I wanted to tell you. I will be right
over.
The President
4:10 p.m., April 7, 1971
P:
I
was looking here toward the last of the speech. We have two
"long and difficults" at about page 14 of your draft. We say, "That is
why I have charted the course tonight to end this war..."
In the next
paragraph, I think maybe we can drop that.
K:
I wouldn't mind dropping the next paragraph.
P:
"The course we are following is not an easy one
11
We talk
too much about that. Would you mind taking that out? Do you see my
point? Later on, I use "long and difficult" in the next paragraph.
K:
We can certainly drop the sentence containing "long and difficult
trial. 11
P:
Let's take that sentence out.
K:
That sentence should certainly go.
P:
You can go directly into the next paragraph.
K:
That sentence can certainly go, but I'm wondering whether the
paragraph can go.
P:
Say, "I can assure you tonight
11
Ending in an upbeat way
rather than going back again over how tough things are.
K:
I'm wondering whether you shouldn't give the doubters a way of
climbing out, but there's a lot to say for keeping it upbeat.
