HAK: I just had a call from Ed Murray saying he sent a telegram to Chou En-lai
and has a call into him and saying he is ready to sent a delegation of editors over
there and theirs here. We took 20 months to nurture it. We will get 2 or 3
turn downs and then shift back. They know we will send newsmen and vice
versa. All they have to do is lift a finger and the U.S. comes running. We
are in bad shape.
K: They have already sent the telegram. I can get a play down.
HAK: And influence with other press and Murray to go with a measured rate.
We will let them in but they can X kill what we are trying to do with the Soviets
which is the big play if we try a big enterprise with the Chinese.
K: I will try to call him. I think I can. I haven't talked on the reciprocal with
him. I said what you do should be on your own.
HAK: But in China they will never understand it didn't come from us.
