Telecon Mr. Kissinger Secretary Laird 5/20/71; 8:05 p.m. L: That was a nice affair tonight. K: I am sorry he left out Defense. Frankly they did better than State. L: That's why I interrupted. I know the name of the game over there is to kiss State's ass. That's not why I called, Henry, we had a lot of calls on game plan I outlined to you on Resor. I gave you a copy of that letter. Is there some holdup on President's reply? K: No, holdup is on approving Froehlke. L: It is leaking all over hell. I am going to write a nice letter to Resor. K: I will get you the reply the first thing in the morning. L: Do you want me to hand deliver to your office now Resor's letter to the President? K: First thing in the morning would be fine. L: They are leaking it all over town. Even Schlesinger called Froehlke and congratulated him. I don't have anything worked out on it. K: I will get you an answer to Resor and I think Froehlke will work out. L: But we are having a hard time filling that other job. I met with Rub Metler (sp. ?) K: See, if you had offered it to me originally. L: I am going to bring Larry Eagleburger over here. K: I am delighted. L: I am going to make him in charge of policy and plans. Don't say anything about it. I am going to talk to him in Brussels. I tried to get him McCloskey's job in State. I am always looking for good people. K: I will do what I can to move that letter back to you. L: There are people calling up wanting Resor's resignation letter. I don't want this to leak anymore than it has.
