6/4/71 3:20 p. m.
A: I thought you ought to hear the end of that.
K: Yes, I wanted to.
A: I told you the terms of our talking. I also mentioned that he started
to ignore the terms and change them when it came time to fulfilil his promise.
In the end of the thing I want to Scotty Reston and said it was too much.
Scotty agreed with me and the Times people told him that the quote I objected
to couldn't be used. Also they told him to show me the quotes he was going to
use. He told me that he had done so. But when the article appeared he had
shown me about one-third of them. Also, in the case of my friends, with Kay
Polly, even Mrs. L (of course you can't expect her to be pleasant about one
person for two solid hours)
K: But I can't imagine her saying what he implied.
A: In any case, they were all extremely admiring they tell me and I am
sure they were. He took one sentence with Mrs. L, pulled it out of context,
distorted it and left out the fact that these people are fond of me.
K: Well, but in a wierd way that does come through.
A: In a wierd way. It distressed me at first. The man really is a con
man and a crook.
K: The real problem I have -- I talked to him briefly yesterday to get
a sense of what he is trying to do
A: But he 11 xxxxx lie to you about that. He told everyone he greatly
admired me and that he thought I was misunderstood. In fact, it was intended
as a hatchet job.
K: Yes, but the irony is that it turned out to be a very positive document.
A: That's why I forgot about it. He really is a liar and a con man and
a smooth one.
K: There are a number of things out of character, for example, the way he
quoted your remark about old friends at the thrift shop. I have said a thousand
times the one man who's friendship will survive this position is you.
A: And it's a very old joke, one I made and didn't mean. This was put in my
mouth as something I did mean. My advise is this: put the terms on which you
talk to him clearly into writing. My further advise is to talk only in your office
and have it recorded. I really don't know whether it is best to talk or not.
Kay advised me very strongly to talk
She said she'd
