TELECON James Naughton (NYT) 6/4/71 6:45 p. m. K: I liked that article of yours. It was very amusing. N: I guess it didn't ruffle too many feathers. K: No, it was nice and friendly and perceptive. N: Thank you on all three counts. We are getting rumors, mostly out of Alb any, that Governor Rockefeller is planning to resign to become a member of the Cabinet, either as Secretary of Defense or Secretary of State. K: Not Secretary of Transportation; he loves to build highways. In another few years he'd have most of the state of New York covered over. N: Have you heard of anything of that sort? K: No. Frankly, I always have to leave the caveat that the President might do things he doesn't tell me about, but I have not even the slightest indication of that kind, and I don't believe it. N: I don't either, but we had to check it out. You can see the re are certain advantages in xxx it in terms of '72 and adding another bright star to the Cabinet wouldn't hurt. K: I can't speculate about something I consider inconceivable. Besides, I think x we have a bright star as a Secretary of State. How do you like that statement? N: May I quote you?
