TELECON
Mr. Kissinger/John McCloy
3:05 p.m., June 8, 1971
K:
John, how are you?
M:
I got a call this morning from McCone. Apparently he has
some kind of contretemps about his availability or about whether we
wanted him.
K:
We want him. He was in the office the other day. He kept
talking away; he delayed his departure. He was apparently wanting me
to ask him to XXIX join the Committee. I thought it had been settled
SO I never raised it.
M:
He was looking for something from the White House.
K:
He will get it.
M:
He called me today.
K:
There's no problem; we want him.
M:
He felt there was something in the State Department was
throwing a block. I have not been able to reach our other friend
Jim Douglas -- yet, but I don't worry a great deal about that.
K:
It's not a major thing.
M:
Are we clear on other possibilities? We have a lot of names. Is
there anybody else I should be or you should be approaching?
K:
You should approach them first.
M:
On the basis, "Would you be willing?" Let me make a couple
of suggestions. One from Dean Rusk Carl Sanders, former Governor
of Georgia. I know him slightly; he has some substance but is not
particularly knowledgeabl e in this area but he's a pretty sound man.
Scranton suggested Stanley Resor.
K:
That won't ever be accepted.
M:
I'm relieved on that. Have you ever thought about Milton
Eisenhower?
K:
Let me check both Sanders and Eisenhower with the President.
M:
How about Reischauer and Robert Ellsworth.
