K: I had a call from Alex Johnson this morning saying that he was confused that you
talked with him last night on the islands.
P: I wanted the status SO when I talked with David. He is doing some thing with
Bill Rogers -- did you know to agree that Japan will agree to discuss issues
with Taiwan. I wanted to know the latest status.
K: He said you are trying to get him to change his mind. He said you mentioned
military assistance to Taiwan. He deesn't know all that's going on.
P: He was a smart aleck about me -- what do I know about negotiations and the
Far East and SO forth. In the Cabinet Room once he said that we could get these
countries to do what we wanted and hadn't asked them. I took this opportunity to
say it's going to take a lot more then friendly persuasion. So net said it might
take something on the military side.
K: He said you were trying to push him to expand the military thing.
P: Bull shit! I said nothing about the trip in August or anything.
K: OK.
P: You can see what I am saying.
K: I took out a sub-phrase that referred to other considerations. Except for that.
P: OK
