Harlow/Kissinger 12:34 p. m. 6/18/71 -2- H: It moves the lightening over. K: No because we will have to go into it. It will for 2 days but after that we will be in it. Those people have already killed Johnson. That;s not what they are after. People who are worreid about the next 3 days are missing it. It's after the next 3 weeks to see these guys stood up for something. I think it's a f profound moral issue. H: I don't see how any President can weazel on this. K: Or play it as a tactical issue. The President owes it for the continuity of govt. to protect his predecessor against this. Naughton was a flaming dove and I despised him for what I thought was unpatriotic and now he appears as a hawk and he was killed with his family and it's not right. H: On the trip the President said kelshould do what kwhe I want. Is he xakx relaxed about it? K: Totally. I raised the point where we started. I said in your view and ours it didn't enhance your credibility with him when we needed it as a free rider. I made it plain that if he preferred it, you would go without question and he said he would abide by our judgment. H: I will then pull off Korea end too. K: That I wouldn't do. H: K No? K: Then he would think you are avoiding identification with him. He had a bright idea and you refused many part of it. I can see why you don't feel needed for the primary objective of the inauguration but I wix would go. H: I will do tk it. I wanted to run it past you. I thought the object we have in mind is not achievable in this way. K: I agree but you should play the game partly his way. You will not bring pressure on Texas. H: The call was cancelled.
