K: (cont) look like a hawk I can't believe. I knew McNaughton as a dove.
H: You are one small segment.
K: All I am saying is we have two choices -- they are liars and not off our
backs or we can say these aren't our documents and we don't know about it.
Or say it's an attack done on the basis of
documents and we cannot
condone this. No judgment on individual documents. It's the highest possible
but most difficult. (pause)
H: Are you talking?
K: No, I'm thinking.
H: I thought I'd lost you. Then Johnson shouldn't go on.
K: I believe that but I could be persuaded. We need a high moral position. I
would play it to the turning point. Can't act on unorthodox way. The President
attacking liberals for denying basic human rights.
H: OK. I think what we should do if we can is stall an hour. Ehrlichman
will be available then and I will go with him. Then we will be on top of it.
