TELECON
Senator Caleb Boggs
6/17/71 10:42 a. m.
K: The President asked me to call you about this Cooke-Stevens thing.
B: That's going to be a close one I would think.
K: That is what we are told. We wanted you to know
we understand
the concerns of people, but we are at such a delicate phase that any sign from
the Senate of pressure on us would be absolutely connter-productive.
B: I can believe that.
K: No one is more interestind than the President in ending the war, for
moral and selfish reasons. It is his considered judgment that this would hurt
the end of the war rather than speeding it.
B: I appreciate your calling and I will be with you on this. But in my
area, Wayne Morse was on WCAU for an hour the other day and he raised
havoc; he said this Administration is as bad as the last. At my home, My
Wilmington office and this office we've been flooded. He inflamed them.
K: I will tell you this -- anyone who sticks with us now is going to look good.
B: I just hope and pray that you are right.
K: Things can go wrong, but if we are hiding anything it's more on the
good news side than on the bad news side.
B: That's good to know -- I appreciate your calling.
K: Not at all. It's a privilege to talk with you.
