TELECON The President 7/15/71 1:25 p. m. K: Mr. President. P: I just thought I'd impress Brandon a little. Is he there? K: I am in the office; I came in to take the call. I just asked him and his wife to come over as a social occasion. P: And is he there now? K: On the proch. P: This will build up the mystery. Really I think he is a decent man. You ought to get his views on those Pentagon papers. And I think without telling him a thing Let's see, what could you say ? K: I don't think I should even hind. It will just be a general foreign policy discussion. It's better if he thinks afterward how cool these people are. P: Thats' right. But he'll look back on this and think Y Oh, one thing I did want to talk to you about. One thought I had; I talked to Haldeman -- I thought you and I and Rogers should have breakfast with Mike at 7:45 before the leaders on Monday. K: Excellent. P: Say when you call him that we want to talk to him in total confidence. Don't tell him what it is -- say you can guess what it is. Tell him I have total confidence in him. You and Rogers and breakfast at 7:45 and then the leaders meeting. K: I'11 tell him it's a matter he and the President have often discussed, but I cannot tell him about it and the President asks him not to talk to anyone about it. I'll say the President feels that he would like to have break- fast with him, and that we are going to ask the leaders tomorrow for a meeting. P: Not today? K: No. P: I thought right after the speech, or before. K: Oh yes, we will.
