TELECON Secretary Laird 7/15/71 5:20 p.m. K: I understand that you got nuclear weapons to Korea too. L: Don't get carried away by these stories. K: No, I'm just pulling your leg. L: I handled that very well Henry. K: Mel, where I was they didn't even cover this stuff. L: It went along very well. We didn't even get into that. K: I know your views on this well enough to know that. Mel, the President is making a major statement tonight at 7:30 our time, 4:30 your time. He wants no speculation of any sort before then. L: Right. K: And no comment of any kind afterwards. He wants the departments to shut up about it. There is to be no commentx by anybody. I talked to Packard about it, but didn't want you to sit out there in Hawaii without knowing what is coming off. L: Right. K: When are you coming back? L: Sunday. K: Well, make sure you don't comment on it at all out there. There will be a Cabinet meeting on Monday to cover it. L: What does it cover Henry? K: I can't discuss it on the phone. L: Does it have to do with your trip? K: It discusses some foreign policy matters. You will see it in a few hours. And I can talk to you about it tomorrow. L: Okay Henry. I am sending you a memo, one on SALT and one on the budget. On SALT I've got a few thoughts that should get through to you before you get back Sunday. And also the one on Vietnam should I send them to San Clemente?
