The President
7/16/71 1:53 p. m.
P: I just wanted to be sure you check with Ron to see whether
they got a statement from Reagan. It's very important in terms of
our right-wing friends. Just tell Reagan it's important for him to
step up and hit it. I don't just want the libs saying this. Someone
told me Stennis is for it. We've got more support from the conser-
vatives than we think.
K: I talked to Moorer and he said he would talk in support of it
to anyone we wanted.
P: And he agrees?
K: Oh yes.
P: I think all the good conservatives do. But this Reagan thing
is one you ought to follow. Is Buckley coming to your party?
K: I'll call him this afternoon.
P: Just tell him you are looking forward to seeing him Monday
night. I got a report from Scalli; he thought you did a terrific job this morning.
K: Isn't that nice.
P: And true!
K: Alex Johnson is getting on it, and I talked to Bill -- he is all right.
P: Of course he is. You made it look like he was in on it right from
the beginning. But it's right for the record now. But does Alex really
feel good about it?
K: Yes.
P: He's no peacenik, he's a decent man. What did Peterson think?
I didn't get to ask him.
K: He thinks it is very exciting. He is here now in fact.
P: Oh, tell him to give you his judgment on Kennedy. I asked him
for that and he said he'd think it over and tell me Monday. You ask him.
K: I talked to Packard. He will stay as Deputy Secretary but is not
willing to go to Japan.
