K: What I want to talk about I couldn't because Peterson was standing right there
Here is the problem. He claims he has three different invitations to go to Tokyo
prior to the meeting. I don't dougt that the Japanese are working every side
of the fence. I wondered what you think of this. Trezise is out there and I said
if he goes one of your people must come.
R: What's the point?
K: Hand-holding with Sato.
R: We don't need that.
K: I am not recommending it.
R: I have heard the suggestion before from him but I don't know what points is.
He has strong feelings on this subject way down inside and secondly, I don't
see what the point will be. Who is the invitation from?
K: Dick Allen has some who claims to be an old friend of StanksSato's. Bad
reflection on Sato. I will turn it off.
R: Jpapnese are all over town.
K: They are pains in the ass.
R: With too many people it will be impossible. It's working as we want. It
floated. They want us to tell them our policy and we are not prepared to do
that. It's not a bilateral matter but unilateral (?). They want to know about
surcharge and we are not IX ready to do that. The point of the ministers'
meeting is to talk about these things.
K: I will discuss it with you when we get back. It's an odd situation.
R: I am not adamant totally but about the present situation. If Sato said they
wanted some one and we knew what it was about but ? ? ? ? ?.
K: With too many people bubbling around.
R: Trezise has been going for a long time and talking about agenda for the
Ministers' meeting.
K: Japanese avoid problems by seeing many people. They sent a special
emmissary to me and I told Alex about it.
