Mr. Kissinger
Secretary Laird
9/14/71; 6:55 p. m.
-2- -
K: Really, the President was extremely disturbed.
L: What did he say about Stu Alsop's story?
K: He didn't say. But Stu is dying and he is no longer rational.
L: These guys are taking the lead -- they think Stu is close to the White
House, etc. I understand Phil Potter wrote a story - - those are cheap
stories -- they don't want to be outdone by Alsop. You will find that
everyone from the Joint Chiefs, Service Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries,
absolutely understand this.
K: Did you see what Evans quotes me as saying about you in his book?
He quotes me as saying Laird is a rascal but a good rascal.
L: That's good. I have other problems, you know. I can't do anything
about the selective service thing. But these cheap stories will continue.
K: We are going to have an NSC meeting on Monday where the President
will make the point with great vehemence.
L: I can't stop a cheap story like that.
K: I think if you scare your people.
L: You can't scare these people.
K: Just scare your own people.
L: There have been no questions answered on troop withdrawals.
K: No conversations in the corridors.
L: I can guarantee you
K: Okay, Mel.
I
L: 10 have a few problems on memos on the Corps of Army XIXIX Engineers, etc.
K: But they don't come from my office.
L: But the President is signing them.
