K: I didnt know that you talked to Assistants to the President;
I see you cavorting around with Prime Ministers. That was a fas-
cinating interview.
R: Yes, I thought it revealed some insights and some of the
things were interesting.
K: I thought your articles also were enormously perceptive.
R: Well, you'd have to be a real amateur to screw up this China
story.
K: This comparism with the puritan ethis and the drive toward a new man
was fascinating to me.
R: There's no doubt that it's there. Whether it can succeed is
another question, but the attempt itself is
K: It's a tremendous spiritual exercize. These people who say
a capitalist country are nuts.
R: I thought maybe the time had come when I might see the President
of the United States since I haven t seen him since the days of the Oregon
primary. Why don't you explore that? I don't want to take his time for
just anything, but on the basis of the larger perspective of where the
world is going I would like to have him agree to let me tape our conver
sation and then revise, extend, or throw it away as he likes.
K: Let me look into it. Iam not optimistic
not because of any
thing about you personally 09 09 but let me raise it. And I hope I will have
a chance to see you.
R: Of course.
K: Are you in Washington now?
R: Yes, but I'mon my way to the country with my sick wife. We're both
just exhausted. But I'm only a short time away from Washington. Let
me give you my number there: 703/EM4-4613,
K: Okay and I'11 talk to the President. And congratulations.
R: Thank you.
