P: For Christ's sake. Funny coincidence! He knows very well this
couldn t have been done. It's good you called him.
K: They can't stand it. It's the part of this game we have talked about.
If they have got to give you credit they have gott to find someone else in the
Administration who did it, not you.
P: For Christ's sake. Rogers did it. Hmm. You think someone in
State did it?
K: It might have been Pedersen. Rogers knows better.
P: They seem to have a phobia for that.
K: It sounds like Pedersen to me
P: It's a good reason not to talk to those bastards.
K: This has been bad for us, but the total impact has been tremendous.
P: Good. As the Dodgers used to say, wait till next week.
K: Right.
P: I saw Brzezinski in Newsweek: he got off on a good wicket. I
marked it for you. He is in for a surprise. He's whining around about all
of this.
K: And of course we have in mind moving with the Europeans when this is over.
P: Did you get Byrd?
K: I talked to MacGregor. He is seeing him this morning and wanted
me to wait until after that. I will call him by the end of the day.
P: If he can do it, don't you bother with it.
K: They think they can kill it in committee.
P: Hmmmm. But Byrd should be reassured. We don't want the con-
servatives to think we screwed them on this issue. The nut group is behind
this too. We &past do n st want to be with them ever, but we shouldn t take
hell for it when we happen to be, and I just happen to agree with them on this.
