S: I wanted to tall you
we're not supposed to tell who writes the
Times editorials but you might not have had to make a phone call this
morning if we had been in better communication earlier.
K: I understand.
S: We just thought there was art and artifice in what Rogers said on
Saturday.
K: There was petulance.
S: When we have only our own newspaper to go by and no exception
was taken to the lead editorial on Monday we have nothing else to say.
K: I didn't see the editorial on Monday.
S: It took Secretary Rogers seriously. He is the Secretary of State
afterall. And by the way, Bob Kleiman doesn't write all the editorials in
the New York Times.
K: Harry, you know what I think of you.
S: That's what made this so embarrassing this morning.
K: Let me ask you personally, did anyone lead you into what you wrote?
S: No. On Sunday I wrote the editorial taking Rogers seriously,
speculating about what the hell might be going on in China and so on. assume
that when the Secretary of State speaks, especially on this delicate subject,
he should be taken seriously.
K: All I can tell you -- I don't want to get into that issue -- but the
announcement was agreed to on September 16, and this was known by the Secretary.
S: Well, no one tried to lead me in this direction.
K: Right. But Harry, when a statement of opinion is made, that I don't
even want to know about. But when a statement of fact is made and you call
me to check it, that I will return within a few hours.
S: Okay. My apologies.
K: No, that's okay. We'll take care of it from here. I think that's the
best way.
S: Okay, and best of luck to you.
K: Thank you.
