HAK: I am not into anything in the economic international field.
PP: Some of these old problems are getting urgent. I could see
you Tuesday morning.
HAK: But let's have breakfast after the staff meeting. No let's skip
the staff meeting and just meet together.
PP: Okay. I hope to fill you in on these problems.
HAK: I have not reached the view that I am willing to fight Connally.
PP: Well, I am now in the course of writing something. I have
come to the conclusion too that we are embarking on a very bad course.
HAK: The only reward in domestic policy is success. If Britian,
France and Germany are in an uproar because of a depression, they
will be furious.
PP: Yes, we are burning the bridges of our friends; and the
Chinese and Japanese will sense this disaster.
HAK:
Yes.
PP: Another urgency-- he met in private talks with the Senate Finance
Committee to give Treasury authority to put quotas and additional
surtax. Proposals submitted for the President to put quotas and tarrifs
unilaterally.
HAK: This put the pressure on him. The only thing I want to know is
whether you are going to keep me in mind in $73.
PP: Oh yes, maybe with a PR firm.
PP: But now the Senate Finance Committee has passed this and the

problem is very delicate

and the President hasn't seen it? There was nothing in writing that
indicated what you were talking about, and you're telling me the
