Secretary Connally/Mr. Kissinger
11:10 p. m., December 9, 1971 -- page 3
C:
He brought this up and I told him I knew the access to Pompidou
was Andre Meyer (sp?) but there might be somebody different that
he would want. I said, how about Henry? Obviously, the President
wanted to have what was possible before we got there.
K:
The problem is I can't get there and back
Pompidou can decide
on his own, he doesn't need 10 people to tell him. If it is the President,
can go a little further.
C:
K:
We have plenty of things to talk about. It's not a bad scheme.
C:
It may work.
K:
My instinct tells me he will try to make it work. I don't know whether
your terms on Agriculture are too tough for him.
C:
Not too tough. We don't have to agree on those in particular, just
in general terms.
K:
I will put it to him. If he will do it, he will do it.
C:
For two reasons, it is well to dictate the parameter the President
wants to speak in. Some idea so he can tell D'Estaing. I don't
think he will tell D'Estaing a goddamn thing
until he talks to
President Nixon.
K:
Until after he talks with the President. I am working on setting up an
appointment in the Azores with him. If you could have something
for me by the weekend.
C:
You will have it.
K:
Good.
