P: I had just a few little things on the briefing book. Is this a good time ?
K: Absolutely. for the conference?
P: At 4:00 tomorrow. With regard to opening statements ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

very sharply limit that for a technical story. Hopes for trip and history of
journey for briefing I give in Hawaii. Don't have enough for there and don't want
them to push me into discussions there.
K: Stay away from substance, both places, because Chinese interpret as
bringing pressure on them.
P: Stuff being prepared. I won't go into that. Hopes of trip.
K: General hopes are fine. Save for Hawaii.
P: Hope of trip on agenda thing, I think we should save for Hawaii. The talks
with leaders will be more open then others I have. Save that.
K: Definitely save that.
P: VN peace plan. Don't want to say that.
K: I would recommend that -- if recommended to you it's a mistake. The t you
shouldn't say. They are psychopathic on the problem of VN. I have said we will
not discuss other people's problems.
P: That's in here. Matter of prisoners. Chinese prisoners.
K: Keep that low key. The technical thing -- one thing Chinese are eager for is that
we not give times for security reasons.
P: Not in here. Announce that axkx on later days. Release itinerary on 14th
but very flexible. We will limit this to technical details, that official parties will
be announced. Announce itinerary on Monday. Say something about Mrs. Nixon's
role. Talks come first.
K: Say that you have read hundreds of pages of transcripts.
P: A lot of preparation and I will study on the plane. And mention the Malraux
thing. Leave out hopes of the trip but leave it for one sentence at the end. Or
save it all.
K:
