P: Oh, don't worry to about that.
K: No, I'm just giving you their thoughts.
P: Well they agree with that and SO do I.
K: That was the least of our problems. But then to my absolute amazement
the CIA guy who I thought was always on the dovish side came out for it
and said the sooner the better, and SO did all the others.
P: They all realize that without this to cut it another way, the danger
of South Vietnam collapsing is better than 50-50, isn't it.
K: That's right. f Thisk One advantage of this Mr. President is if Vietnam
collapses after this we still have a bargaining card for our prisoners.
P: That's right.
K: While without it, we've got nothing.
P: We've got nothing, that's right. Yes, well even then we can get something
out of the thing because even if it collapses it isn't just like that, if you know
what I mean. We aren't just going to surrender. There's going to be one
hell of a mix-up.
K: My Vietnam expert thinks it will be win it. Which amazed me, because
I told Haig that I would guarantee he'd come out violently against it.
P: Right. Well now, the other thing is as I told you Henry, the main thing
is we've gotten these opinions and we can't look back. We can't torture
ourselves about it because the more we say should we or shouldn't we and
all that, we won't do it right. Once we decide on something then you go
ahead and do it. Do you understand?
K: I completely agree. But I just feel that I owe it to you Mr. President to
look at all the things that could happen.
P: Now we've looked, haven't we. Now we've looked. Fine, fine, fine.
And I know there are going to be some things happening, and that's that.
The second thing is, did you get Connally by any chance?
K: No, because the meeting just ended, but I will get him.
P: Would you get him now and then call me back before I start my work on
my talks, to get tell me something about the tone of my talks. One other
