TELCON Mr. Kissinger/President 5/6/72 5:45 p. m. RN: HAK: I have 't been able to reach Connally yet--he is in Virginia somewhere, but I will get him in the next half hour RN: You mean Mitchell-- HAK: Mitchell, I will see in a little while. You want me to talk just briefly to Connally-- RN: Sure I want him to be like a fireeater--you know. HAK: I will get him before the meeting, you can be sure. What time did you want that meeting? RN: Why not 10:00 -- what do you think--what - - would be the best time? HAK: Well, I think the earlier the better, so at least they can say they tried to tal k you out of RN: All right 9:00 - the thing I ts feel very strongly about Henry-- Do you remember when we worked up here on November 3--and Cambodia and I think the fact that both Rogers and Laird played sour-- HAK: Hell, they wouldn't even callyou after November 3 and until we called them and said a lot of telegrams were coming RN: An hour later--We are not just going to be disturbed by the fact that they are both playing it safe. I just--it is just discouraging to you to have this attitude--what it is they are just too influenced by the Establishment HAK: They aren't even part of the establishment. , that is what its SO amasing they just can't take any heat. And they are just taking their own short-term interest above the national interest.
