TELECON Governor Rockefeller 5/9/72 12:29 p.m. K: Hello. R: Henry! K: I just hope you have a job for your friend when they run me out of here. R: Oh I sure do Henry, and I tried to get you last night, but the White House was busy all night so I just wanted to tell you that I thought that the President was great; I thought it was a great statement; I thought he never looked stronger or better. K: Thank you. R: And I put out a statement supporting it and the United Press wire reads as follows: Governor Rockefeller, let's see President Nixon's campaign manager in New York State hailed the President's speech Monday night as a forthright statement "in the best interests of our country and world peace. 11 K: Terrific. R: UP wire. K: Terrific. Well, you've been a friend as always. R: which I'm sending down, and that's despite what he did to me on abortion. K: (laughs) I don't think he knew what he was doing if you want my frank opinion. R: Well, you didn't hear about this because I haven't bothered you. But he called me on Sunday, see, about this action. K: Yeah. R: You know, his decision on Monday and so forth and when he got through he never mentioned this front page Daily News, see, you know big bold headlines right at the top, and on the front page of the Times. When he got through on this other stuff he said, well you'd better go back to your gardening. I said well before I go back to my gardening Mr. Presi dent I just want to tell you that there's an awful lot of bitterness in the Republican party up here that you're writing Cardinal Cook a letter opposing a bill
